Native Plant Program Technician
Late May- September 2026
Full Time $22/hour
About the Program : FSWCD's Native Plant Program supports Alaska-grown native seeds for restoration and conservation through the Seeds of Success (SOS) program.
Position Overview: Hands-on fieldwork across Interior Alaska collecting native seed to support conservation and restoration projects.
Key Responsibilities: Native seed collection and documentation, phenology tracking, seed processing, inventory support, and occasional outreach activities.
Required Qualifications: Plant ID experience, relevant coursework or fieldwork, comfort with physical outdoor work, GPS/data collection skills, and a valid driver's license.
Preferred Experience: SOS familiarity, remote field experience, advanced plant ID skills, and First Aid/WFA.
Work Conditions: Frequent travel to field sites, variable schedules based on weather and seed timing, and exposure to rugged outdoor conditions.

Seasonal Invasive Species Technician (May-September 2026)
Introduction:
The successful applicant for this position will assist the FSWCD Invasive Species and Habitat Program team in a variety of technical tasks associated with invasive plant management in interior Alaska. This position is very active and consists primarily of field work with some days spent working at the office. Potential overnight trips may occur with 1-2 nights spent in the field per trip. This position requires many hours surveying both on foot and on small watercraft. This position may also require the applicant to safely handle herbicide products under the supervision of the Invasive Species Specialist.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assist with invasive plant projects, including aquatic and terrestrial plant surveys, herbicide application events, public outreach, creation of educational materials, equipment maintenance, and data management.
2. Public outreach and education on invasive plant issues.
3. Other duties as assigned
Desired Qualifications:
1.Background in natural resource fields especially Botany, Ecology, or Fisheries
2.Degree or course work in Biology or Natural Resources.
3.Ability to work independently on projects
4.Comfortable working outdoors for long periods of time, and comfortable in boats and small aircraft
Wages and Benefits:
This position will be 30-40 hours a week from May - September 2026. The rate of pay will be $22 per hour.
This position includes paid holidays.

Intern Job Description: Natural Resources Intern for Youth for Habitat Program
The Fairbanks Youth for Habitat program promotes career exploration through community
involvement. In its 13th year, the program provides youth with skills, work ethic, character,
and environmental stewardship through local habitat projects. It improves the community with
habitat restoration, enhancing public spaces for human and wildlife interactions. It also creates
a first job experience and career pathway for local youth in outdoor and natural resources
fields, fostering partnerships with local agencies to emphasize youth as stewards and active
community members.
Fairbanks Soil & Water Conservation District (FSWCD) promotes sustainable land development
and works with private landowners to address their natural resource concerns. By partnering
with local, state, and federal organizations, the FSWCD provides education and technical
assistance to private landowners regarding soil, agriculture, water, invasive species, forestry,
land development, and other related natural resource issues. The FSWCD operates the
Fairbanks Youth for Habitat program as part of this mission.
In 2025, the Fairbanks Youth for Habitat (YFH) program will enlist a seasonal Natural Resource
Intern to lead a 10-week youth development initiative in the Fairbanks area. The initiative will emphasize awareness of post-high school opportunities and careers in natural resources and offer educational and practical experience for enthusiastic candidates.
The 2025 YFH program will include three two-week-long Beginner Corps sessions, each comprised of up to 8 students aged 13-14 from the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, home schools, and other local youth in Fairbanks. In 2024, there will also be two two-week-long Advanced Corps sessions comprised of up to 8 participants from the 2024 Youth for Habitat Program—Beginner Corps.
Position: Natural Resources Intern
Description:
The Natural Resources Intern will coordinate daily operations during the 10-week youth
development program. This includes supervising middle school youth, managing logistics and
budgets, conducting scientific observation, ensuring participant safety, and fostering positive
interactions with the public to promote environmental stewardship.
Responsibilities:
• Attending FSWCD Orientation
• Becoming familiar with the program objectives and expectations
• Interviewing and selecting new and returning program participants
• Following FSWCD protocol for employee and student behavior and interaction
• Following a predetermined schedule of activities
• Supervise and direct
up to eight 13–14-year-old students per 2-week session, five sessions total, keeping students
engaged in programming.
• Maintaining a daily activity and financial expenditure journal.
• Gathering, maintaining, and reporting on data gathered in the field, which may include Global
Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE).
• Maintaining, cleaning, and organizing materials, vehicles, and storage spaces.
• Instructing and managing middle school youth
• Working and encouraging others positively towards unfavorable conditions, including bugs,
mud, rain, work in waterways, cold, hot, humid weather, etc.
• Completing all final reports. Checking in all program materials.
Qualifications:
• Valid driver's license
• Computer literacy (working knowledge of word processing, PowerPoint, Excel). Proficiency in
Excel is highly desired.
• Experience and a strong desire to work with middle school youth.
• Experience with scientific observation, data recording, and reporting.
• Completed or working toward a college degree, preferably in a related field (e.g., Natural
Resources, Wildlife, Biology).
• Worked as a partner or team member in a large project.
• Self-motivated, good organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task, and
meet deadlines.
• An effective communicator, both written and oral; phone skills are necessary.
• Term: May 6 to August 22, 2025
• Hours: M-F, 8 Hours/day (8:00 am – 4:00 pm), 40 Hours/Week- May 6 through August

Conservation Support Technician
March-December
Limited Term Position (756 hrs) at $27/hr
Position Description: Seeking flexible, part-time, partial remote worker, in Fairbanks, to develop a local working group to identify conservation priorities for communities within the Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District boundaries and to provide support for our soil sampling program.
$27/hr DOE for March-November timeline, with intermittent work into December .
Introduction: The Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District (FSWCD) is an outreach and technical assistance organization whose mission is to serve its cooperators, private landowners, and all citizens of the district by promoting wise development and conservation of natural resources. The person who is selected for this position will develop and host a local working group to identify conservation priorities for communities in interior Alaska. They will also provide support for the FSWCD soil sampling program. This is NOT a field-based position though several trips to communities within our district are required.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Seek community contacts and participants, develop a survey, host a local working group for this purpose, compile findings into a report, present findings to partner organizations
- Analyze soil nutrient data and write nutrient management plans for home gardeners, community gardens, and farmers
- Assist communities and landowners with soil sampling
- Public outreach and education on soil sampling
- Limited travel in interior Alaska is required
- Other duties as assigned

- Interest in working with people to talk about natural resource conservation and soil sampling
- Ability to take initiative and work independently on projects
- Potential ability to work from home but check-in to our District office weekly for backups
Wages and Benefits This position will be a limited-term and part-time-ish position for 546 hours from March - November 2025. The rate of pay will be based on previous experience and is $27/hour, depending on the project. An additional 210 hours at $27/hour are available for June-December.
