What is Youth for Habitat?

Youth for Habitat is an educational program that recruits local youth (ages 13-16) to engage in scientific research, community outreach, & service learning projects. Since 2009, we have worked to improve local wildlife habitats & provide youth with valuable skills & knowledge about natural resources & ecology in Interior Alaska.  Our goal is to get youth outdoors & enthusiastic about the many opportunities for lifelong engagement in their environment, while contributing service that improves the local community.

If you love the outdoors, science, hands-on activities, & are open to learning about salmon, wildlife, research, & what it's like to work in the natural resources field, this could be an exciting program for you!*

Activities include:

  • minnow trapping, contributing to scientific research about salmon, water quality testing, restoring waterways & riverbank habitat, installing & maintaining green infrastructure projects, trail building, & creating gardens to increase local food security

Educational opportunities include:

  • learning from professionals who study exciting topics like insects, migratory birds, permafrost, wildlife & salmon, & work in fields such as forestry, agriculture, invasive species control, flood control, recreational management & so much more!

Participants join us for a two week Beginner Corps program their first year, & upon successful completion, return the following summer for two weeks in Advanced Corps, which tackles large-scale restoration projects from start to finish. Each program offers a stipend.

Applications are available in early spring (March) of every year, through our website as well as local middle & charter schools, & homeschool organizations. All applicants are required to interview for the program, with acceptance awards following.** Programs run throughout the summer from late May until early August, with specific dates varying each year.

*No prior work or outdoor experience is required, but enthusiasm is expected!

**Submitting an application and interviewing are not guarantees of acceptance into the program as spots are limited.
