Conservation Support Technician
March-December
Limited Term Position (756 hrs) at $27/hr
Position Description:Â Seeking flexible, part-time, partial remote worker, in Fairbanks, to develop a local working group to identify conservation priorities for communities within the Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District boundaries and to provide support for our soil sampling program.
$27/hr DOE for March-November timeline, with intermittent work into December         .
Introduction: The Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District (FSWCD) is an outreach and technical assistance organization whose mission is to serve its cooperators, private landowners, and all citizens of the district by promoting wise development and conservation of natural resources. The person who is selected for this position will develop and host a local working group to identify conservation priorities for communities in interior Alaska. They will also provide support for the FSWCD soil sampling program. This is NOT a field-based position though several trips to communities within our district are required.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Seek community contacts and participants, develop a survey, host a local working group for this purpose, compile findings into a report, present findings to partner organizations
- Analyze soil nutrient data and write nutrient management plans for home gardeners, community gardens, and farmers
- Assist communities and landowners with soil sampling
- Public outreach and education on soil sampling
- Limited travel in interior Alaska is required
- Other duties as assigned
Job Requirements
- Background in natural resources or community development projects
- Interest in working with people to talk about natural resource conservation and soil sampling
- Ability to take initiative and work independently on projects
- Potential ability to work from home but check-in to our District office weekly for backups
Wages and Benefits This position will be a limited-term and part-time-ish position for 546 hours from March - November 2025. The rate of pay will be based on previous experience and is $27/hour, depending on the project. An additional 210 hours at $27/hour are available for June-December.

Seasonal Invasive Species Technician
Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District is hiring two Seasonal Natural Resources Technician Positions. These positions are funded under the Public Land Corps (PLC) Initiative, seeking to improve the capacity of students (age 16-30 years old), particularly Alaska Native students, to advance on-the-ground conservation activities in the State of Alaska and provide exposure to careers in conservation that provide qualifying service hours under the PLC authority.
We are looking for highly motivated individuals who are enthusiastic about working outdoors and seeking to gain experience in the field of natural resources. The position will involve assisting the FSWCD Habitat Program with a variety of field-based activities including terrestrial invasive plant inventory, aquatic invasive plant surveys in lakes and sloughs throughout interior Alaska, herbicide treatments to eradicate the invasive aquatic plant elodea, fish passage assessments, stream discharge measurements, and community outreach about invasive plants.

Job Details
• Job duties: - Assist with terrestrial and aquatic invasive plant projects including mechanical and chemical control of invasive plants, aquatic and terrestrial invasive plant surveys, equipment maintenance, and data management - Public outreach and education on invasive plant issues - Other duties as assigned
• Job requirements: - Course work in Biology or Natural Resources - Experience in or strong interest in learning plant identification - Experience in or strong interest in field data collection in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems - Interest and enthusiasm for field work under sometimes inclement conditions - Applicants must be able to pass a federal background check
• Wages and benefits - This position will be 30-40 hrs/ week from May – September 2023. Start and end dates are flexible. - The rate of pay will be $19/hr. - Upon completion of a minimum of 640 hours and at least 120 hours of work on Service lands, candidates will qualify for a Public Land Corp Act Certificate to be used towards future Federal hiring and non-competitive hiring status for 2 years after completion of the PLC service.
